The Lovers may be the most widely known tarot card of all. The imagery evokes thoughts of romantic love and partnership. But it's full meaning goes much deeper than attraction and compatibility. Love begins within ourselves, with the choices we make and values we embrace.
Consider the phrase, "You can't love another person until you love yourself."
At its core, My Love / The Lovers is a simple love song about finding yourself through another - when feelings of wonder and intrigue form out of union and the hidden depths of one person reach for the openness of their counterpart. It is a time when complimentary conditions awaken expansive growth and giving.
Growing up, my family didn't value affection, attunement, or admiration. I learned to keep my feelings hidden. I lived in my head and not in my body, except when I was making music. Most of my first songs were about relationships, because that had always been an area of struggle for me. I was looking for my "other half" and coming up short, because I saw the world differently and couldn't relate.
It was hard for me to understand other people because of how I grew up. I didn't trust anyone with my heart. But I wished for a way. I dreamed of finding my person. I imagined an endless well of motivation and creativity so that when I got there, there would be no limits to what I would be willing to give and do for the relationship.
'My Love' was written earlier in my songwriting career, long before The Music Tarot was even a speck of an idea. The initial tracks were recorded over a decade ago. Back then, I thought I was just writing songs as a way to express my intrinsic needs. I believed I was making art for art's sake. I didn't realize I was writing songs to access emotions I had been taught to ignore. Songwriting was my way of connecting with my spirit. I didn't totally understand how that connection worked, I just knew I needed it to feel alive.
While its roots formed out of young love between two people, today the song represents much more than just the romantic relationship I share with my husband. It is more about figuring out who I am, so that I can be present and enjoy all that I am united with. I re-introduced this song into my life and produced it anew to allow it to become what it was meant to be all along - a love song about a songwriter finding her divine self.
