March 4, 2022
It's Friday, the day of the week for going out and having fun, so I decided to release my next single today. This is the first of a regular cadence of single releases. For the foreseeable future, I'll be putting out a new song every other Friday. I've always liked Friday. It's the end of the work week for many. Two magical days of non-work sit ahead. Sleep-In Saturday is less than 24-hours away. And, I usually feel like socializing with my friends, which is exactly what the Three of Cups represents.
I picked the Three of Cups on a Friday in fact. It was Friday July 23, 2021, and the song came through like a packed nightclub of melodies. Eight days later I had a rough mix recorded. I remember trying to sing the notes in the outro. I knew exactly what needed to be sung, and how it needed to hang in the air, but my voice kept cracking. I remember taking a break and walking around the backyard, picking up after Sparkle and Magic, and practicing the notes. I'm not sure if any of my neighbors heard me and were wondering, "why does picking up dog poop make my neighbor sing so joyfully?" A funny thought.
Then I came back inside to my studio, sucked in as much air as I could muster, and hit the notes I so desired. Satisfied I had done my part, I sent the tracks off to Brian, and let him work his magic. (Brian Daly is my producer. He is the co-owner of DNA Music Labs in Madison, WI.)
Brian is a genius. An honest-to-god genius. And I am lucky enough to have gotten his attention and found him willing to take me on as a client and partner. Brian got into his groove and finessed the vocals just enough to make those beautiful notes even more beautiful. His treatment of the piano and Wurlitzer, tucked back just enough, is superb. And finally, with the percussion, mostly a grouping of loops I purchased from Drums on Demand, Brian filled the front, back, and far-corners of the mix with powerful hits and tones that gave the song a gentle steadiness and solid footing. I couldn't be happier with the end result. The icing on the cake is getting to share it today.
